Lily of the Valley

Los Angeles, California
I met Lily and her mom in their home for some newborn photos. Lily is such a cute baby!

Lily slept for much of the portrait session.

And she cried for a little bit.

The key to newborn portrait sessions is patience and lots of breaks. Portrait sessions can make babies hungry!

Here she is asleep again...

Encore! Catch of the Day

I love photographing the wedding day, the hustle and bustle of getting ready, the raw emotions during the wedding ceremony, the fast moves on the dance floor, and the quiet moments when the bride and groom share a kiss and they think no one is watching. At the end of the day, I want my photos to tell the story of your wedding.

Although I consider my style to be photojournalistic, I do take posed photos during a wedding. But even during these photo sessions, I'm looking to capture the bride and groom's personalities. This shot is from Melissa and Mark's wedding near San Diego. Mark loves fishing and borrowed a pole from a fisherman on the dock, while Melissa pretended to not be happy with him (although in her vows she said he can go fishing whenever he'd like, as long as she can go shopping).

P.S. This is my new blog series called Encore!

When I blog about a wedding or portrait session, I try to arrange all the photos to tell a story. Sometimes great photos don't quite fit. Encore! will feature one (or two!) of those photos every Friday.

Thank you!

Thanksgiving is a time of reflection for me on what it means to be thankful. I feel very blessed that I am able to do what I love which is all thanks to you. Thank you for trusting me with your memories.

Wishing you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving.

Encore! Lady in Red

For this weeks Encore! I'd like to share a photo taken by Polka Photos' awesome second photographer Michael Gonzalez. Michael comes with me to most of my full-day weddings and I love working alongside him. It's also a nice perk for the bride and groom to have some wedding photos taken from a different perspective. Michael took this photo of the bride's sister at Ester and Keith's wedding reception.

Lights, Camera, Action

Playa del Rey, California
Anaya, Nyree, Aria and their mom met me by the Del Rey Lagoon for an action-packed portrait session.

They loved posing for the camera.

Anaya does her model walk.

She's on the track team so action shots came easy to her. She loves running!

Nyree wasn't going to be out-run by her sister. She likes to run, too!

Look at that smile!

Their one-year-old sister Aria didn't quite know what was happening, but she liked looking into the camera.

Encore! The Ladies Man

After taking photos of the entire bridal party, I took this cute snapshot of the adorable ring bearer from Natalie and Gerald's wedding in downtown Los Angeles.

With Gratitude - On Veteran's Day

Thank you to all who have served.
Thank you to all who are serving.
Thank you to all who will serve.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Postcards from Playa: Fall in Bloom

Playa del Rey, California
Fall is easy to miss in Los Angeles. There's no leaves turning shades of yellow, red and orange to tell Angelenos a new season has begun. I have my own barometer - when the pampas grass blooms I know summer is over, even though the temperature might still be in the 80's.

Got Chocolate?

Los Angeles, California
Just in case you didn't get enough chocolate yesterday, I thought I'd tempt you with my new chocolate discovery. Most people come back from the farmer's market with fruit and vegetables, I come back with chocolate!

ChocoVivo is made fresh weekly using the millennium-old process of stone grinding. There's no extras like cacao butter or soy lecithin or anything that's partially hydrogenated. In addition to dark chocolate, ChocoVivo also makes it's own unique flavors by adding ingredients like salt, goji berries and coffee beans. If you have a chance, check out their website, or better yet find them at your nearest farmer's market and try a sample.

Danse Macabre

Los Angeles, California
Michael and I had a hauntingly fun time at the First Congregational Church's Halloween night presentation of the silent film The Phantom of the Opera. In true 1920's fashion, the movie was accompanied live by organ music played by the fantastic Christian Elliott. It was incredible!!!

Phantom of the Opera

The organs at the First Congregational Church are the largest church organs in the world!

There was even a movie star in the audience. Carla Laemmle played the role of the prima ballerina in this movie, but she is also known for having the first spoken line in a horror movie playing a coach passenger in Dracula. Here she is today at 101 years old side by side with a photo from her film days.

Hope your Halloween was a scream!
